Chad has a record: to be one of the countries in the world with the youngest population ever. Almost fifty percent of the inhabitants are a child or young person under the age of fourteen. The youth makes itself felt in every corner of the country. Children, girls and boys who fill the villages, who run and shout their “joie de vivre”. The schools are overflowing with students, with classes of 30 or 40 students without books: only a crumpled notebook under the arm accompanies them throughout their learner period. Young people who become adults early, sometimes too soon. Work in the fields, the corvée of the water or the keeping of the herds await them. Innocence is painted in their eyes: they often perform the same tasks as an adult, but it is almost a game, a job done without asking too many questions. So is the world.

Il Ciad ha un primato: quello di essere uno dei paesi al mondo con la popolazione più giovane in assoluto. Quasi il cinquanta per cento degli abitanti è rappresentato da un bambino o un giovane con meno di quattordici anni. La componente giovanile della popolazione si fa sentire ad ogni angolo del paese. Bambini, ragazze e ragazzi che riempiono i villaggi, che corrono e gridano la loro gioia di vivere. Le scuole tracimano di studenti, con classi di 30 o 40 allievi senza libri: solo un quaderno sgualcito sotto il braccio li accompagna lungo tutto il periodo da discente. Giovani che diventano adulti presto, talvolta troppo presto. Il lavoro nei campi, la corvée dell’acqua o la custodia delle mandrie li attende. L’innocenza è dipinta nei loro occhi: spesso svolgono le stesse mansioni di un adulto, ma è quasi un gioco, un lavoro fatto senza porsi troppe domande. Così è il mondo.
